Last night, I went to the Hostage Calm tour kick-off and Night Owls record release show in Milford. I caught Hostage Calm at The Space back in the fall, and it was the sweatiest, more energetic performance I’d ever been to, so I came last night with high expecations.
I wasn’t dissapointed. I just missed Baby Grand, but came in time to see Manners send the audience into a frenzy. Their music was aggressive, relatable, and played at breakneck speed. There was no physical division between the audience and the band, meaning that the singer could get right up in our faces and give everyone a chance to scream along. The energy was intense, but welcoming, and provided a great start to the night.
Night Owls were up next, with a more emotive, atmospheric set that was equally hard to resist. The moshing came to a stop, but mainly because the audience was lost in the landscape of twinkly guitars and thudding bass. The lead singer’s asides were poignant, and made the music even more effective. I managed to snag their ep,Dearly, which ends with a song they played near the end of their set, ‘Revenge & Redemption’, which I’d recommend to anyone who’s ever felt self-hate, anyone who’s ever felt confused, and anyone who’s ever felt angry. As they said, ”this is a song…about making yourself happy”.
Defeater came on next, with a wall of blinding, defeaning, screaming, sound. I was pretty tired out, so I absorbed it from the sidelines, but it was still just as much of an experience. Defeater conquers all five of your senses, until you can’t help but be taken in. Their singer was the most adventurous so far, going into the audience and getting thrown around with the rest of us, and letting us yell into the mic. Everyone’s hearts were racing and their blood was thumping in time for the headliners.
Hostage Calm completely blew it out of the water. They’re one of the more socially and politically active bands in the Connecticut scene, and over the beat of the snare drum, the lead singer told the heartbreaking story of a gay couple in New Jersey, the first to adopt a child. It added an element to the enthusiasm that none of the bands had introduced, something too powerful for me to even have a name for. It was a feeling of solidarity, that every time we screamed or crowd surfed or stage dove, we did it together. We were all allies and we were all happy.
The audience, myself included, left the venue so hot, that our skin literally steamed when the night air hit it. My arms were dead from shovin myself through the crowd, and the rest of my body is just now starting to ache. It was well, well worth it. A fantastic concert.
this is a really great review of our release show last night.
From the bottom of our hearts thank you to anyone who has listened to the record and/or came out last night. Thanks to hostage calm, defeater, manners and baby grand for not only being a few of our favorite bands, but our best friends as well.
The response to our release is beyond our wildest dreams, this is the start of a long journey for night owls and thank you to the new and old friends who celebrated with us last night.
